What Time Do Driving Test Cancellations Come Out?
⚡ Quick Summary
- There is no official release time. A cancellation appears the moment another learner cancels or moves their test
- The DVSA change service runs from 6am to 11:40pm, so that is when slots change hands
- Early morning, lunchtime and the evening are the busiest windows
- The DVSA also adds new dates in batches with no warning
- Being alerted within a minute beats knowing the "best time" to check
"What time do driving test cancellations come out?" is one of the most searched questions by UK learners, and most answers online are guesses. The honest answer is that there is no set time. But there is a pattern to when slots appear, and once you understand where cancellations come from, you can stop refreshing at random and start catching them.
Is There a Set Time the DVSA Releases Cancellations?
No. The DVSA does not hold cancellations back and release them at 9am or midnight. A slot becomes free the instant somebody else cancels or moves their test, and it is open to the first person who books it.
Slots come from two places:
-
Other learners changing their plans. They are not ready, they are ill, they have moved, or they found a better slot somewhere else. This is where most cancellations come from, and it happens all day.
-
The DVSA adding new dates. When extra examiner time is found, new tests are added to the system in batches. There is no announcement, they simply appear.
The DVSA's change your driving test service runs from 6am to 11:40pm. Overnight, nobody can cancel or book online, so nothing changes hands. That makes the 6am opening one of the most competitive moments of the day.
When Slots Appear Through the Day
Because cancellations follow people's routines, they cluster around the times people pick up their phones.
Are Some Days Better Than Others?
The DVSA does not publish data on this, so be wary of anyone who tells you "Tuesday at 7am" is the magic time. What we can say is that cancellations follow lessons and life. Days after a lot of lessons (early in the week) tend to bring changes from learners who have realised they need more time, and the run-up to school holidays and Christmas brings changes from people whose plans have shifted.
The bigger factor is how many centres you watch. A busy centre with lots of tests booked produces more cancellations than a small one, whatever the day.
How the 2026 Rules Changed the Timing
Since the DVSA changed its booking rules in 2026, you need to give more notice to change or cancel without losing your fee, and each booking only gets 2 changes. In practice this means more learners make their decisions earlier, so a lot of cancellations now appear a few weeks before the test date rather than in the final few days. Short-notice slots still appear, but they mostly come from people who are ill or simply do not turn up. Our 2026 rules guide covers every change.

How to Be First When a Slot Appears
Save your details on your phone
You need your driving licence number and your booking reference to change your test. Keep them in your notes so you can paste them in seconds.
Know your instructor's free days
If you are using their car, you need to know straight away whether they can do the slot. Ask them for their availability for the next few weeks.
Watch more than one centre
Every centre you add is another stream of cancellations. Pick the ones you can realistically get to.
Turn on notifications and act fast
When the alert comes in, open the GOV.UK change service straight away. Slots at popular centres can go in a few minutes.
