How to Change Your Driving Practical Test (Date, Time or Centre)

Need to move your driving test to a different date, time, or even a completely different test centre? You can do it online in a few minutes through the DVSA website. But the rules around timing and refunds trip up thousands of learners every year, so it's worth knowing exactly how it works before you click anything.

⚡ Quick Answer

  • Change online at gov.uk/change-driving-test — no account needed
  • Free to change with more than 3 clear working days notice
  • You lose the full £62 fee if you change with 3 or fewer days notice
  • Cannot transfer to a new centre — cancel and rebook instead
  • No limit on how many times you can change your date

How to Change Your Driving Test Online (Step by Step)

The DVSA's online booking system is where you do everything. You'll need your driving licence number and your test booking reference — both were sent to you when you originally booked.

  1. 1
    Go to gov.uk/change-driving-test
Head to the official DVSA change page. Do not use any third-party sites. The official GOV.UK page is the only place to safely change your test.
  2. 2
    Enter your driving licence number
This is the 16-character alphanumeric number on the front of your photocard licence. Make sure you're using your full licence, not a provisional in someone else's name.
  3. 3
    Enter your test booking reference
This was sent to you by email and text when you booked. If you've lost it, check your inbox for an email from "noreply@gov.uk" with the subject "Driving test booking confirmation".
  4. 4
Select "Change test date and/or time"
You'll see your current booking. Select the change option. The system will immediately warn you if your test is within 3 clear working days and that changing now would forfeit your fee.
  5. 5
Choose a new date and time
The system shows you availability at your current test centre. Dates with slots available are highlighted. Select your preferred date and time and confirm.
  6. 6
Confirm and save your new booking reference
You'll get a new confirmation email and text. The original booking reference is replaced — save the new one somewhere safe. Your test fee carries over with no extra charge.
💡
No Account Needed

You do not need a DVSA account to change your test. The system uses your licence number and booking reference — no login required.

What Does It Cost to Change Your Driving Test?

The cost depends entirely on how much notice you give. Change with time to spare and it costs nothing. Leave it too late and you lose your test fee.

Notice Given Cost to Change Test Fee
More than 3 clear working days Free Carries over to new booking
3 clear working days or fewer £62 lost (weekday) Forfeited — must pay again to rebook
3 clear working days or fewer (weekend) £75 lost Forfeited — must pay again to rebook

The fee structure exists so the DVSA can manage test centre capacity. Examiners are rostered weeks in advance. A last-minute change leaves a slot empty that someone else could have taken.

⚠️
Illness Exception

If you or your vehicle are involved in an accident, or you have a serious illness with a doctor's note, you may be able to claim a refund even within the 3-day window. Contact the DVSA directly on 0300 200 1122. Evidence is always required.

The 3 Clear Working Days Rule Explained

This is where most people get tripped up. "3 clear working days" does not mean 3 calendar days. And it does not include the day you make the change or the day of the test itself.

Working days are Monday to Friday. Saturday, Sunday, and bank holidays do not count as working days, no matter how far in advance they fall.

📅 Example: Your test is on Thursday. To change for free, you must change on or before the Sunday before it. That gives 3 clear working days: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Change on the Monday and it's too late.

The system enforces this automatically. If you're within the 3-day window, the DVSA site will warn you before you confirm a change.

📘
Bank Holiday Trap

If there's a bank holiday in the window between your change and your test, those days don't count. A test on the Tuesday after a bank holiday Monday effectively requires you to change by the previous Wednesday to have 3 clear days (Thursday, Friday, and... you've run out of working days if you miss it).

Can I Change to a Different Test Centre?

Yes, but the DVSA's system does not let you directly transfer a booking to a different test centre. You have to cancel your existing test and rebook at the new centre.

If you cancel with more than 3 clear working days' notice, you get a full refund to your original payment card and then pay again when you rebook at the new centre. The refund typically takes 5 to 10 working days to appear.

People do this regularly when they move house, when they discover a centre with a much shorter waiting list, or when they want to use a centre known for easier routes. It's completely allowed.

How Many Times Can You Change Your Test?

There is no official limit. You can change your test date as many times as you like, provided you always give more than 3 clear working days' notice each time.

Some learners change their test multiple times over the course of their learning, either because they feel underprepared or because they spot better availability at a closer centre. The DVSA does not penalise you for this.

That said, your instructor will likely have a view on whether changing the date is actually helping you or whether it's just delaying the inevitable. If you're test-ready, booking the change to an earlier date is a far better move than pushing it back again.

What If I Need to Change Last Minute?

If you're within 3 clear working days and you have a genuine reason, your options are limited but not zero.

🚫
Do Not Simply Not Show Up

Failing to attend a test without cancelling is treated the same as a late cancellation. You lose the full £62 fee and your booking is cancelled with no refund. Always cancel or change through the official channel, even if it's last minute.

How to Change Your Test to an Earlier Date

This is the most useful change you can make. If you're already test-ready and stuck waiting months for your booked date, getting an earlier slot can mean passing and getting on the road weeks sooner.

The DVSA system does show available dates when you go through the change process, but what's available officially is always a fraction of what actually exists. Tests get cancelled every single day as other learners push their dates back or drop out entirely. Those slots appear and disappear within minutes.

That's where PassSlot comes in. We monitor 300+ test centres every 60 seconds and alert you the moment a cancellation slot opens near you. Most users find an earlier test within 14 days.

🎯
Move Your Test Forward, Not Back

PassSlot monitors your preferred test centres 24 hours a day. The moment a slot opens that matches your availability, you get a text and email alert so you can snap it up before anyone else does. One-off £18 fee, full refund if we can't find you a slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to change a driving test?
Changing is free if you give more than 3 clear working days' notice. If you change within 3 clear working days of your test, you forfeit the full test fee: £62 for a weekday test and £75 for a weekend or bank holiday test.
Can I change my driving test to a different test centre?
Yes, but you must cancel your existing booking and rebook at the new centre. The DVSA system does not let you transfer directly. If you cancel with more than 3 working days' notice you get a full refund, then pay again when you rebook at the new location.
How many times can I change my driving test date?
As many times as you like, as long as each change is made with more than 3 clear working days' notice. There is no DVSA-imposed limit on changes.
What counts as 3 clear working days?
3 clear working days means 3 full Monday-to-Friday days, not counting the day you make the change or the day of the test. Weekends and bank holidays don't count. If your test is on a Thursday, you must change by Sunday midnight to get the 3 clear days (Mon, Tue, Wed).
What if I've lost my booking reference?
Check your inbox for an email from "noreply@gov.uk". If you genuinely can't find it, call the DVSA on 0300 200 1122 with your driving licence number and they can retrieve your booking details.
Can I change my test if I'm ill?
If you fall ill within the 3-day window, contact the DVSA as soon as possible on 0300 200 1122. With a doctor's note or other evidence, they can sometimes issue a discretionary refund or allow a free change. This is not guaranteed and is assessed case by case.
Does changing my test date affect my theory test validity?
Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you passed it. Changing your practical test date does not reset or extend this. Make sure your new practical test date falls within that 2-year window.
Can I change my driving test using the DVSA app?
The DVSA does not have an official standalone app for managing practical test bookings. Use the GOV.UK website at gov.uk/change-driving-test. Be wary of third-party apps claiming to change your booking — only the official GOV.UK site is legitimate.
