Driver checking mirrors - common test mistake

The 10 Most Common Driving Test Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

The DVSA publishes data on the most common reasons UK learners fail the practical driving test. The same mistakes appear in the top 10 year after year, which means if you know what they are and actively train to avoid them, you're already ahead of the majority of candidates.

The Top 10 Faults, From DVSA Data

#1Junctions , Observation

The single most common serious fault. Emerging at junctions without adequate observation, typically pulling out when it isn't safe, or not looking far enough before emerging.

✅ Fix: Always look right, left, right again. If in any doubt, wait. Never emerge on a glimpse.

#2Mirrors: Change Direction

Failing to check mirrors before changing direction, when turning, changing lanes, or pulling away. Examiners need to physically see your head move.

✅ Fix: Exaggerate your mirror checks. Make your head movement obvious and deliberate before every direction change.

#3Control: Steering

Poor steering control, including mounting the kerb, cutting corners on turns, or failing to straighten up after manoeuvres.

✅ Fix: Slow down for turns. Look ahead to where you want the car to go, not directly in front of you.

#4Junctions , Turning Right

Incorrectly positioned when turning right, either too far left (blocking other traffic) or cutting the corner when turning.

✅ Fix: Position just left of the centre line when waiting to turn right. Complete a full right-angle turn to end up on the left-hand side of the new road.

#5Moving Away, Safely

Pulling away from the kerb unsafely, without observing over the right shoulder or in good time to avoid making other drivers brake or change position.

✅ Fix: Mirror-signal-blind spot check before every pull-away, including from during and after manoeuvres.

#6Response to Traffic Signs

Missing or incorrectly responding to traffic signs, including speed limits, give way signs, and no-entry signs.

✅ Fix: Actively scan road signs as part of your forward observation. Look ahead, not just at the road immediately before you.

#7Move Off , Road Position

Moving off at an incorrect position, either from a hill start without full control, or returning to an incorrect road position after a manoeuvre.

✅ Fix: After any manoeuvre, consciously check your position and correct it before accelerating to normal speed.

#8Reverse Parking, Control

Loss of control during bay or parallel parking, mounting kerbs, poor accuracy, or completing the manoeuvre too quickly.

✅ Fix: Slow right down. There is no time limit on manoeuvres. Methodical and accurate beats fast and wrong.

#9Positioning, Normal Driving

Incorrect road position during general driving, drifting towards the centre line, following too close to parked cars, or poor lane discipline on multi-lane roads.

✅ Fix: Think about your position continuously. Aim for a consistent 1m gap from parked cars and keep your eyes scanning far ahead.

#10Mirrors , Change Speed

Not checking mirrors before slowing down or braking. Many candidates remember to check mirrors when turning but forget to do so when simply reducing speed.

✅ Fix: The mantra is mirror-signal-manoeuvre, before ANY change in speed or direction. Make it automatic.

The Most Effective Preparation

Knowing the top 10 mistakes is only useful if your instructor actively trains you to avoid them. Ask for a fault-focused mock test, tell your instructor to mark the DL25 sheet as an examiner would, so you get realistic feedback before the real thing.
