What to Expect on Your Driving Test Day: A Complete Walkthrough
Test day anxiety is often worse than the test itself, and that's almost always because candidates don't know exactly what to expect. This complete walkthrough covers every single minute of your DVSA practical driving test, from the moment you arrive at the test centre to the moment you hear your result.
Before You Even Arrive
Arrive 1 to 5 minutes early, not earlier. Sitting in a waiting room for 45 minutes will only heighten anxiety. Use the time before you leave home to do a final equipment check:
-
Your UK photocard driving licence, both parts if you have an old paper licence + counterpart.
-
Your theory test pass certificate, the examiner will ask for the certificate number.
-
Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them for driving, you must wear them on the day.
-
Your instructor's car, confirm this with your instructor the day before the test.
The DVSA will not let you take your test without your photocard driving licence. There's no flexibility on this, you'll forfeit your test fee. Double-check the night before.
The Test: Minute by Minute
Arrival & Waiting Room (~10 mins before)
Report to the reception desk. You'll be asked to show your driving licence. Take a seat in the waiting area, your examiner will come to collect you when it's time.
Meeting Your Examiner
Your examiner will introduce themselves and confirm your name. They'll explain that they won't be able to help you during the test, any questions you have should be asked now.
Eyesight Check (~2 mins)
Before getting in the car, you'll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres away. If you can't do this with any required glasses or lenses, your test ends here.
'Show Me, Tell Me' Vehicle Safety Questions (~3 mins)
You'll be asked two vehicle safety questions. One "tell me" question (answered verbally before driving) and one "show me" question (demonstrated while driving). These count as one minor fault if both are wrong.
General Driving (~20 mins)
Your examiner will direct you through a variety of road types and situations. Drive normally, as you would on any lesson. The examiner's directions will be clear and given in good time.
Independent Driving (~20 mins)
You'll drive independently using either a sat-nav (provided by the examiner) or road signs. The sat-nav prompt is on, you just follow it. If you take a wrong turn, don't panic, it won't count as a fault.
Manoeuvre (~5 mins)
At some point during your test, you'll be asked to perform one of: reversing into a bay, parallel parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing. Take your time, the examiner does not mark you on speed.
Return to Test Centre & Result
The examiner will tell you the result in the test centre car park or inside. If you've passed, they'll explain next steps for your full licence. If you failed, they'll go through every fault on your DL25 result sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions About Test Day
Can my instructor come in the car? Yes, your ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) is allowed to sit in the back seat as an observer, but they cannot speak or intervene.
What if I make a mistake? Carry on driving normally. One serious or dangerous fault is a fail, but up to 15 minor faults is still a pass. Don't dwell on what just happened.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat an instruction? Yes, absolutely. If you didn't hear a direction clearly, ask them to repeat it. This will not count against you.
What happens if the test is cut short? If a serious incident occurs or if the examiner needs to intervene for safety, the test may be terminated. You'll be told the outcome at the test centre.
The earlier you test, the earlier you're on the road. PassSlot finds driving test cancellations 24/7, so you can move your test forward by weeks, sometimes months.
