How to Get a Driving Test Before Christmas 2026
⚡ Quick Summary
- There are roughly 10 weeks left until Christmas, and most busy centres are showing dates well into 2027
- Booking a brand new test will not get you in before Christmas. Moving an existing booking into a cancellation will
- You only get 2 changes per booking under the 2026 rules, so make the Christmas move count
- Watch 3 to 5 centres you can genuinely reach, not just your nearest one
- No tests run on the bank holidays: Friday 25 December, Monday 28 December and Friday 1 January
Every year the same thing happens. Learners who are ready to drive in November look at the DVSA booking site, see nothing until February or March, and assume the Christmas pass is off. It usually is not. Slots before Christmas keep appearing right up to the last working days of December, because other people's plans change. The trick is being set up to catch one, and being ready when you do.
Can You Still Get a Test Before Christmas?
Yes, but not by booking a fresh test today. New bookings go to the back of the queue, and at most busy centres the back of the queue is several months away. Our DVSA waiting times guide explains why the backlog is still this long.
What does work is moving a test you already have into a slot someone else has just given up. Those slots appear every day at every centre in the country. Somebody fails a mock test and decides they are not ready. Somebody gets ill. A student goes home for the holidays and cancels. Each of those is a date before Christmas that is suddenly free for the next person who spots it.
Cancellation slots are taken by changing the date of a test you have already booked. If you have not booked yet, book the earliest date you can at any centre you would be happy with, then start looking for a better one straight away.

Here is how the next 10 weeks break down, and what you should be doing in each stretch.
How to Get Your Christmas Slot: 5 Steps
Be honest about whether you are ready
Ask your instructor for a full mock test under test conditions. If you are picking up more than a handful of minor faults and the odd serious one, an earlier date just means an earlier fail. Read our common driving test mistakes guide and work on those first.
Pin down your instructor's December diary
December is busy for instructors too. Find out which days and times they can do so you can say yes to a slot in seconds, rather than texting them and losing it while you wait.
Pick 3 to 5 centres you can actually reach
One centre gives you one stream of cancellations. Five centres gives you five. Under the 2026 rules you can only move to nearby centres, so choose the ones within a sensible drive. Our guide on taking your test in a different area covers the details.
Get alerts instead of refreshing
The DVSA booking service is open from 6am to 11:40pm. You cannot watch it for 17 hours a day. An alert service like PassSlot checks every 60 seconds and texts you the moment a matching slot appears, so you only need to look when there is something worth booking.
Only spend a change on the right slot
You get 2 changes per booking. Do not burn one on a date that is only a few days earlier than what you have, or on a time your instructor cannot do. Wait for the one that genuinely gets you in before Christmas.
Christmas Test or Wait for Your Date?
If your current test is in February or March, here is what moving it forward actually changes.
You tell us your test centres and the dates you can do. We check the DVSA every 60 seconds and send a text and an email when a match appears. You then log in to GOV.UK and move the booking yourself. We never touch your account.
Mistakes That Cost People a Christmas Slot
-
Watching one centre. Your nearest centre might be the busiest in the county. Add the others you could drive to.
-
Only checking in the evening. Slots go at all hours the service is open, and the 6am rush is one of the busiest. See what time cancellations come out.
-
Not having your details to hand. Keep your licence number and booking reference saved on your phone. Typing them in from a drawer costs you the slot.
-
Grabbing a slot your instructor cannot do. If you are using their car, they need to be free. Otherwise you have used a change for nothing.
-
Forgetting insurance. Taking the test in your own car? Have your insurance proof ready. Our 2026 rules guide explains what is checked.
